Chryso's Beauty Buys: Conditioner by Chryso D'Angelo, April 29 2015, 4 Comments

I never realized how many options are available when it comes to conditioners until I started my research for this post. You can choose an eco-friendly, natural conditioner (see my reviews below). You can choose a cleansing conditioner (that means you skip the shampoo part!); these contain little to no detergents (ones to try are Shea Moisture Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser and Ouidad Curl Co-Wash). Or, you can leave conventional products out of your shopping cart completely for two other fairly popular alternatives:

1. Replace conventional conditioner with coconut oil. Melt it and massage through hair; then rinse.
2. Go “no-poo, no conditioner.” Replace your shampoo and conditioner combo with baking soda (as the alkaline cleanser) and apple cider vinegar (as the acid counterpart).

I am super-intrigued by all of these options and def want to test out the "no poo" plan, but for now, here’s my take on four notable, eco-friendly conditioners to try out:

1. Zosimos Botanicals Apple Orchard Conditioner

• Has signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and enjoys “Champion” status
• This product is not ranked on the Skin Deep Database

Environmental responsiveness: The ZB studio reduces its carbon footprint by using 100% wind power and reports that it only patronizes suppliers that use sustainable harvesting practices, grow pesticide-free plants and produce Certified Organic and or natural ingredients. Some of the groups ZB studio supports include the Denali Citizens Council and Reef Check Australia. This company does not test on animals.

Results: Have you every smelled a sour apple Jolly Rancher candy? Yes! That is what this conditioner smells like so right off the bat-LOVE! It doesn't hurt that it's amazing conditioning qualities left my hair soft and silky. The blend is light and thin—so make sure not to overpour and waste—just a dime to a quarter-size spot (depending on hair length) is enough to get you to smooth nirvana!

Ingredients from packaging: Castile Soap; Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Gel; Disodium Cocyl Glutamate (Natural Surfectant); Xanthan Gum; Pyrus Malus (Apple) Flavor Oil; Hydrolyzed Lupine Protein; Potassium Sorbate; Althaea Officinalis (Marshmallow) Root.

Practicality: $20 (8 oz.)

2. Happy Happy Joy Joy

• Has not signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics
• This product is not ranked on the Skin Deep Database

Environmental Responsiveness:

Pots and bottles are made from BPA-Free, 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. Store carrier bags are made with 100% post-consumer recycled paper and are compostable.

Products for shipment are packed in biodegradable plastic bags, recycled paper and/or biodegradable filler and eco-friendly packing tape. Gifts are wrapped in 100% recycled paper and packaged with biodegradable filler.

By making shampoo bars solid, the company saves over 450,000 liters (118,800 gallons) of water each year. 100% of electricity consumed is replenished into the grid with renewable energy from wind and low-impact hydro, through Bullfrog Power.

In the spring of 2010, Lush hit their goal of reducing overall energy consumption by 14%. No animal testing. Since launching their Charity Pot program in 2007, the company has donated more than $5,800,000 to over 600 grassroots charities in 35 countries.

Results: I use this A+mazing conditioner on my 4-year-old's hair and we love it. Not only does it help detangle (she has a habit of twirling her hair into knots), but it smells sooooo lemon-y good. I can hardly keep from sniffing her head after bath time. And I love that it's an eco-friendly product, especially since it's used on my baby.

3. Pureology Hydrate Conditioner

• Has not signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics
• This product ranked 0 (low hazard) on the Skin Deep Database

Results: My colored and highlighted hair can look dry, especially when it's due for a salon visit. This product gave it a serious overhaul, plus it doesn’t contain color- and moisture-stripping sulfates that could make the condition of hair look even worse. Since spring has sprung and the days are sunnier, I can’t wait to see if it also extends the life of my color.

Ingredients from packaging: AntiFade Complex Jojoba Esters and Shea Butter, Natural Plant Extracts: Peppermint, Sage and Rosemary, Signature Aromatherapy Blend: Peppermint and Corn Mint Essential Oils

Practicality: $29.50 (8.5 oz)

4. Acure Organics Conditioner, Moroccan Argan Oil & Argan Stem Cell

• Has not signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics and enjoys “Champion” status
• This product ranked 2 (low hazard) on the Skin Deep Database

Results: While my hair isn’t curly, which this conditioner is perfect for, it does frizz—and lots! I tried this product to see if it would stave off those pesky pop-up-everywhere hairs and it works! It leaves my hair hydrated and more manageable.
