How We Choose Our Products

Sustainability Criteria

How do we establish sustainability standards for the products in our shop? Very carefully!  Since we opened our first online shop in 2008, part of our mission has been to make it easier for you, the socially conscious shopper, to figure out what is in the products you buy and how those products are made. This way, you can align your values with the best information to make your own purchasing decisions! We know there is no “one size fits all” approach to sustainable, green, or eco friendly shopping online.

We have seen many “green” online stores go out of business. Unfounded claims of being “eco friendly” and “natural” were not backed up by verifiable standards. At EcoPlum, we have earned your trust and have always applied stricter standards to selecting the environmentally friendly products in our shop.  Unlike many other online stores, we can safely say that all our products meet one or more criteria for sustainability. We aren’t a little green, in either sense of the word.

On top of that, as women entrepreneurs ourselves, EcoPlum likes to support women-owned businesses.

So down to the nitty gritty now. Here are the specific criteria we use:

Organic

Products made primarily of Organic ingredients and materials.  We look for products that meet the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Organic certification and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) ecolabels but also rely on ingredients and materials lists.

Recycled

Products made primarily of post consumer recycled materials or upcycled from scraps of previous products.

Fair Trade

Products from companies that are members of the Fair Trade Federation, Fair Trade America, the World Fair Trade Organization, or Fairtrade International

Artisan

Products that are handmade by individual, skilled craftsmen and women using high-quality materials and ingredients, without the benefit of modern manufacturing.

Made in USA

Products that are made in the United States of America.

Reusable

Products that can be used over and over again to replace their disposable counterparts.

Vegan

Products made of 100% Vegan ingredients and therefore have no animal content.

Woman Owned

We like to support other women owners striving for success, with products they produce here in the US, or source elsewhere, particularly in developing markets where they help raise women out of poverty.

Low Toxicity

All our makeup and skincare products come from companies that have earned Champion status on the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, or the products we have in our shop have scored low on a hazard scale established by the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep database.

EcoLabels

Reputable third party certifications and recognized labels from government entities and non governmental organizations (NGOs).  These non-profit agencies and organizations make their determinations based on:

--environmental resources and energy conservation,

--product materials and composition,

--life cycle analysis and management,

--final method of disposal,

--organic farming methods

--Fair Trade values in sourcing raw materials, manufacturing, production and treatment of labor

These are many of the eco labels we look for in selecting companies and products for our online boutique.
